Protecting your People, Data and Reputation
Universities, colleges, and research centres rely on digital systems for everything – from teaching and learning to admin and research. But with that reliance comes risk.
Recent cyber-attacks on higher education institutions have caused serious disruption, halting operations and damaging reputations. When systems go down, so does staff productivity, student learning, and trust.
As technology plays a bigger role in education, protecting your network, data, and people is more important than ever. While no security solution can stop every threat, the right cyber defence can reduce your risk – and help you recover faster if the worst happens.
2024 Figures
97% of UK universities have experienced at least one cyber incident
52% of primary schools have been affected by some form of cyber breach
The average cost is £500,00 per major incident
43% of schools lack a formal cyber incident response plan
Don’t be the Next High-Profile Attack
University of Manchester – June 2023
Hackers infiltrated the University of Manchester’s systems, accessing data from staff, students, alumni, and NHS-linked research. Although the university quickly alerted authorities and launched an investigation, it took months to fully assess the breach’s extent. This incident highlighted the growing risks to higher education institutions holding sensitive health and academic research data.
Billericay School – May 2024
In Essex, The Billericay School fell victim to a cyber-attack that exposed the personal data of pupils and staff. It formed part of a wider spike in education-targeted incidents across the UK, with schools increasingly reporting attacks involving data theft and ransomware. The breach disrupted operations and raised fresh concerns over cybersecurity readiness in secondary education.
St James Academy – 2024
St James Academy, part of Dudley Academies Trust, experienced a ransomware attack that severely impacted IT systems and disrupted teaching. The trust worked with the National Crime Agency and NCSC, but significant downtime affected students and staff. This case underscored the increasing pressure on multi-academy trusts to enhance their cyber defences.
