Protecting Production, IP, and Supply Chain Resilience

Modern manufacturing runs on connected systems – controlling everything from production lines to supply chains. But this increased connectivity also opens the door to greater cyber risk.

Recent cyber-attacks on manufacturers have caused costly downtime, halted production, and exposed valuable intellectual property – impacting output, customer commitments, and competitive advantage.

As digital transformation drives smarter factories, securing your systems, data, and people is essential. While no solution can stop every threat, a strong cybersecurity posture helps reduce risk, protect uptime, and keep your operations moving – even when under attack.

The Alarming Figures

Don’t be the Next High-Profile Attack

Toyota – 2022-2023

Toyota faced multiple cyber incidents, including a major ransomware attack on supplier Kojima Industries, which forced the automaker to halt operations across all 14 domestic factories – disrupting production of over 13,000 vehicles in a single day. The attack highlighted the fragility of supply chains and the ripple effect of poor third-party cybersecurity. Stronger identity security practices like MFA or passwordless authentication across suppliers could have prevented lateral access and limited the scope of the breach.

JBS Foods – 2021

In 2021, meat processing giant JBS paid $11 million in ransom after a REvil ransomware attack halted operations across the U.S., Canada, and Australia. The breach likely originated through compromised credentials – an increasingly common entry point. Robust identity controls, including enforced MFA and phishing-resistant authentication, could have added critical layers of defense, preventing the attacker from gaining access in the first place.

Honda – 2020

Honda experienced a global production shutdown due to a ransomware attack using Snake (Ekans), which specifically targets industrial control systems (ICS). The breach illustrated how attackers exploit credential weaknesses in OT environments. A modern approach using passwordless authentication and enforcing MFA – especially for access to ICS – can prevent such unauthorized intrusion and protect critical manufacturing infrastructure.
