Protecting your People, Data and Reputation
Energy providers, utilities, and infrastructure operators depend on digital systems to keep critical services running smoothly. But with increased connectivity comes increased risk.
Recent cyber-attacks in the sector have caused major disruptions – shutting down operations, threatening safety, and undermining public trust. For organisations managing essential infrastructure, the cost of downtime is high, both financially and reputationally.
As digital transformation accelerates, protecting your networks, systems, and people is no longer optional. A strong cybersecurity strategy won’t stop every attack – but it can significantly reduce risk, limit impact, and ensure you stay in control when it matters most.
The Alarming Figures
586% increase in utility cyber breaches in 2023
Personal data of 140,000 customers and employees was exposed via utility-related cyber attacks in 2023
Regulators can issue fines up to £17 million for non-compliance with cyber security obligations
Don’t be the Next High-Profile Attack
Southern Water – February 2024
Black Basta ransomware gang in early 2024, resulting in the compromise of personal data belonging to around 2.7 million customers. Although operational downtime was limited, the recovery effort and damages were estimated to cost the company approximately £4.5 million. This incident is considered one of the most high-profile ransomware attacks in the UK utilities sector.
Elexon – May 2020
In 2020, Elexon, responsible for electricity market operations, suffered a network intrusion that led to the lockdown of internal email systems. Despite the disruption, core operational technology and electricity market functions were not affected. This incident highlighted vulnerabilities within utility IT infrastructures.
Sellafield – 2019-2023
Over several years, Sellafield faced criticism and regulatory fines totalling nearly £400,000 for cybersecurity lapses that left a large portion of its servers exposed. While no confirmed breach occurred, this case exposed serious risks within nuclear waste management systems, emphasising the critical need for stringent cybersecurity in the energy sector.
