What is a WiFi Survey?

A WiFi Survey, also referred to as a Wi-Fi Survey, Wireless Site Survey, Wireless Network Survey or RF Survey, is a detailed assessment of your wireless environment.

Its purpose is simple: to understand exactly how your wireless network performs and identify anything that could reduce reliability, performance or user experience.

Many organisations assume that installing more access points automatically improves wireless coverage. In reality, poor Wi-Fi performance is often caused by incorrect design rather than insufficient hardware.

Too many access points can create interference. Incorrect channel planning can reduce throughput. Poor access point placement can leave dead spots while simultaneously causing excessive overlap.

Without a professional wireless assessment, these issues are difficult to identify.

“I’m pleased to report that both the wireless site survey and access point swap out and removal operations have been successfully completed. I want to particularly commend DTE for their outstanding execution.”

Why businesses need professional WiFi Surveys

For many organisations, poor WiFi isn’t just frustrating, it stops people working.
Dropped Microsoft Teams calls, unreliable handheld scanners, slow warehouse devices and intermittent wireless connectivity all have a direct impact on productivity and customer service.
Over the last two decades we’ve completed professional wireless site surveys across a wide range of environments, including:

🔹 Distribution centres
🔹 Warehouses
🔹 Manufacturing plants
🔹 Hospitals
🔹 Universities, schools and colleges
🔹 Corporate offices
🔹 Hotels
🔹 Retail stores
🔹 Stadiums
🔹 Airports

Site Survey

An on-site assessment that measures actual WiFi performance, coverage, and interference in the real environment.

Predictive WiFi Survey image

Predictive Survey

A software-based design using floor plans to predict AP placement, coverage, and capacity before installation.

An AP on a Stick survey validates wireless designs using temporary access point installations before permanent cabling is completed.

Do you experience these challenges?

Poor Access Point Placement

Incorrectly positioned access points often create inconsistent coverage and unnecessary overlap. We identify the optimum locations for reliable coverage and efficient roaming.

Wi-Fi Dead Spots

Areas with little or no usable signal prevent users from connecting reliably. We identify these locations and recommend improvements.

Coverage Holes

Weak coverage may not cause complete disconnection but often results in poor application performance and slow roaming.

Poor Roaming

Devices remain connected to distant access points instead of moving to stronger signals, causing dropped calls and interrupted sessions.

Co-Channel Interference

Multiple access points sharing the same channel reduce available airtime and overall performance.

Adjacent Channel Interference

Improper channel planning causes overlapping frequencies and unnecessary contention.

Excessive Transmit Power

Higher transmit power isn’t always better. Incorrect power settings often reduce roaming performance and increase interference.

Sticky Clients

Some devices continue communicating with distant access points even when better options exist nearby.

High Retry Rates

Frequent retransmissions increase latency and reduce throughput for all users.

Capacity Bottlenecks

High-density environments require careful wireless design to ensure sufficient capacity for users and devices.

Warehouse Shadowing

Metal racking and stored goods create complex RF reflections that require specialist survey techniques.

Lift Shaft Attenuation

Concrete cores, lift shafts and service risers frequently block wireless signals between floors.

FAQ

A Wi-Fi survey is a professional assessment of wireless coverage, performance, interference, and capacity within a building or site.

Costs vary depending on site size, complexity, and survey type. Contact us for a tailored quotation.

Most surveys are completed within one day, although larger sites may require additional time.

Passive surveys analyse wireless signals, while active surveys connect to the network and test real-world performance.

Yes. Professional surveys can identify interference from neighbouring networks, equipment, and other RF sources.

In most business environments, a survey significantly improves deployment quality and reduces future performance issues.

We recommend surveying whenever major building changes, wireless upgrades, or performance issues occur.
