Technology in schools is changing fast. Strong Wi-Fi and robust network connectivity is no longer a nice-to-have, they’re essential. That’s why the Department for Education (DfE) created ‘Connect the Classroom’ initiative – a fully funded programme to help schools improve their wireless networks.
This blog explains everything you need to know.
What is ‘Connect the Classroom’?
Connect the Classroom is a government scheme that pays for schools to upgrade their Wi-Fi and network infrastructure. It’s focused on schools in Priority Education Investment Areas (PEIAs) and Education Investment Areas (EIAs) – mainly places where schools face extra challenges or funding pressures.
What’s the goal?
- Upgrade old and unreliable wireless systems
- Support cloud-based learning tools
- Get schools ready for future digital needs
Which schools can apply?
The DfE is targeting schools in qualifying investment areas. If your school is eligible, the DfE will contact you directly to invite you to take part.
You’re likely to qualify if:
- You’re in a PEIA or EIA
- Your current Wi-Fi isn’t up to standard
- You’ve received a letter or email from the DfE
If you haven’t heard from them the DfE and you think your school should qualify, it’s worth reaching out to them or your local authority to ask.
What does the funding cover?
If your school takes part, the DfE pays for everything needed to bring your network up to standard. That includes:
- Wi-Fi 7 access points (for faster, more reliable wireless)
- Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) switches
- Network cabling and patch panels
- Racks, cabinets, and other hardware
- Configuration and setup by a specialist
- Labour and installation costs
What are the technical requirements?
The DfE has a clear set of technical standards your new system must meet. These make sure every school gets a high-quality, future-ready setup.
Key requirements include:
- Wi-Fi 7 access points
- Centralised network management
- PoE+ switches that support VLANs and QoS
- Gigabit (or better) uplinks
- Secure wireless (WPA3 or enterprise-level security)
- Reliable roaming for staff and students moving between rooms
Your supplier must follow these specifications, so it’s important to choose a trusted partner.
How does the process work?
Here’s a quick step-by-step of how the programme usually works:

Be Contacted by the DfE
Around 300 to 400 schools will be able to apply for funding. If your school qualifies, the Department for Education (DfE) will let you know in spring 2025

Notify us of your Eligibility
As soon as the DfE confirms your school’s eligibility, get in touch. We’ll then set up a scoping call with you, either online or in person, whichever works best

We Conduct our Evaluation
Our experts will carefully assess your wireless network and clearly explain what improvements are needed

Share your Analysis with the DfE
Soon after we complete the technical evaluation of your school, our specialists will give you a detailed report that’s ready to share with the DfE for approval

Receive DfE Approval & Notify us
Notify us once the DfE approve the funding and confirm that your school can go ahead with the work

Enjoy a Fast & Reliable Wi-Fi Network
Our team of certified experts, who have successfully installed hundreds of wireless networks with minimal disruption, on budget and on schedule, will get started right away
Why should your school take part?
This programme isn’t just about fixing old Wi-Fi. It’s about building a network that supports how students and staff learn, teach, and collaborate today and in the future.
Benefits include:

Fast, reliable wireless across the school

Capacity for more devices, including 1:1 rollouts

Better support for cloud tools like Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace

Easier management for IT teams

Stronger network security
What should you be doing now?
If you’ve been invited, or think you might be soon, here’s how to prepare:

Review your current setup
Assess your Wi-Fi coverage, switch models, cabling, and management tools

Stay alert for updates
Stay in touch with the DfE and your local authority

Find a specialist supplier
Choose a partner that has extensive experience in Wi-Fi installations and can guide you from start to finish

Plan for the future
Ensure your new network can scale as your digital needs grow

Plan around your calendar
Aim to schedule installation during holidays or quiet terms to reduce disruption
Final thoughts
The ‘Connect the Classroom’ programme is a big opportunity. It helps schools modernise their digital infrastructure without spending from their own budgets.
But to get the most from it, schools need to plan ahead, follow the process carefully, and work with the right partners. With the right setup, your school will be ready for cloud learning, growing device use, and whatever comes next in education tech.
